Luba Caryatid Headrest

Authentic hand-carved wooden headrest from the Luba people of the Democratic Republic of Congo. Traditionally associated with high-status individuals, these sculptural objects were designed to support the head during rest while preserving elaborate hairstyles and providing comfort in warm climates. Often referred to as “seats of dreams,” they also carried strong cultural and symbolic significance.

Expertly carved from a single piece of dense hardwood, this piece features a kneeling female caryatid figure with raised arms supporting the curved neck rest above. The rectangular base is decorated with detailed cross-hatched carvings, reflecting the refined artistry and balance characteristic of Luba craftsmanship.
